                                                      Training

While not all horses are geared to be a barrel horse, Terri finds that most barrel horses have a strong emotional personality. Terri’s training will produce a nice, quiet, well broke horse. One that looks forward to going to work everyday without holding a grudge whether the horse is being trained for barrel racing or trail riding. Terri starts each horse in the round pen. This shows Terri what the horse knows and doesn’t know and which way the horse works the strongest. In the round pen she teaches the horse to collect its body by getting soft laterally, vertically and to move forward. She also works the horse on backing up, yielding it's hind quarters and moving it's shoulders.  Terri's wants a horse not only to be soft in all of it's five body parts but to be able to move each body part independently, creating a horse that is respectful and responsive.

After the horse has mastered the work in the round pen, Terri starts working from the horses back flexing for softness, leg yields, 380-degree turns on the haunches, counter arcs, more backing and stopping correctly to name just a few.

When the horse is proficient in all of these maneuvers, she then works the horse on the three barrel pattern, first walking, then trotting and finally loping through correctly.

Before the horse goes home, Terri works with the rider, teaching him/her how to cue their horse correctly and at the right time.

Starting Colts

Terri specializes in starting colts. Their first experiences will be positive and rewarding for them as well as the rider. A correctly started colt will not only retain its value over time, but will enhance all your riding experiences by having a solid relationship and foundation.

Cost

The current cost of training is $660 per month, and we provide quality grass hay or $600 per month, and the owner provides their own hay. The fee includes the training and board but excludes vet bills and/or shoeing that the horse may require while at the facility. Star Amazing Grace Performance Horses is a year round training facility.

We only take 6 training horses in at a time so the horses in training  get ridden 5 days a week or 20 days a month, guaranteed.
